Proxy Numbers
Humans like numbers. We like numbers so much that we will take numbers and make a story from those numbers. While the numbers may be related to the story, the numbers may not tell the whole story.
There are infinite whole numbers and infinite fractional numbers. Even still, the numbers are incomplete.
They might get you to a probability of what happened or even what is likely to happen, but it is not enough to fill in the infinite number of gaps in the narrative.
Faith in numbers is pretty reliable in a deterministic system. But in more stochastic systems that number is not very reliable.
