Aversion to Versions

While having choice between features and products is often a good, sometimes the level of choice goes too far.

There are so many dividing lines between product versions. Just look at how many ways Microsoft offers their Office Suite of products. Is it one product or one thousand products? It is hard to tell.

While it makes sense that the same product can be offered many ways, it can often add friction to the buying process.

Navigating the difference between Windows Home and Windows Professional is not really that hard, if you know what the differences mean. But is they added friction to the selling and buying process really worth it.

Sure there is extra revenue for Microsoft which is not insignificant, but there so much more overhead throughout the whole selling and buying process where the costs are difficult to add up.

The value of product variety maybe lower and the costs may be higher than you think.
